What Are Dental Crowns?
A dental crown is a restoration that can treat cavities or damage from trauma, helping us repair the tooth and restore it to its normal look and function. A crown is essentially a “cap” that’s custom-made to match the shape and color of a natural tooth, then placed over the tooth to create a lifelike outer appearance and restore normal chewing function. We make crowns from porcelain or from a tooth-colored dental composite material, allowing us to perfectly match the natural shade of your teeth.
How Do Dental Crowns Work?
Placing a dental crown is a relatively simple and routine procedure that’s completed over the course of two office visits. In your visit, our Great Neck dentist will carefully remove any decayed or damaged tooth material from a cavity, clean and sterilized the tooth, then shape the tooth to fit a crown. We’ll take an impression of the re-shaped tooth, then place a temporary crown over the tooth for protection. After your first appointment, we’ll use the impression to custom-manufacture your own permanent crown over the course of the next week or two. When your permanent crown is ready, we’ll call you in for a second appointment to remove the temporary crown and place your permanent crown with dental cement.
What Are Dental Bridges?
A dental bridge is another form of dental restoration, but instead of fitting onto an existing tooth, bridges work to replace missing teeth. Similar to crowns, bridges can be made from porcelain or a tooth-colored dental composite material. Bridges are composed of one replacement tooth that’s attached to crowns on two adjacent teeth, and there are three main types of bridges that are each used in specific situations:
- Traditional Bridge: A traditional bridge is made from a replacement tooth that’s connected to two crowns, with one on each side of the replacement tooth. This is the most common form of bridge and applicable in most situations.
- Cantilever Bridge: This form has both crowns attached on the same side of the replacement tooth, one after the other. These are primarily used to replace the rear molars, which may not have teeth on both sides.
- Maryland Bridge: This bridge uses tooth-colored metal bands attached to adjacent teeth instead of crowns. These are used to replace the front teeth, which may be too thin to receive a crown.
How do Bridges Work?
The procedure for placing a bridge is very similar to that of placing a crown. First, our dentist will clear away any damaged or decayed tooth material, then shape the supporting teeth to receive crowns. We’ll take an impression of your teeth to use when manufacturing the bridge, then attach a temporary bridge while we make the permanent restoration. Once your permanent bridge is ready, we’ll bring you in for a second appointment to remove the temporary bridge and fit the permanent bridge into place with dental cement. After that, your complete smile is yours to keep!
